I have just finished doing an internship in counseling
in geriatrics with patients who live in nursing homes. One common thread
with them was that they don’t get a lot of visits from family. Of course,
some may not remember due to memory loss and others just don’t get visits
anymore. When I heard this, on my way home a thought came to mind. How
often does God get a visit?
How many times we plan to pray,
read the Word, or just sit and talk to God only to find we are getting
ready for bed and it dawns on us we didn’t spend any time with God. We
say to ourselves, tomorrow. I will do it tomorrow. We become
just
like the family who doesn’t make a visit to a loved one in a nursing home
because of a busy schedule and time just slipping away.
If
we don’t make time for God we will miss out on the best He has for us.
Sometimes God likes to hear what’s on your heart or just to chat. Once we
consistently make an appointment to meet with God we will find out it
takes very little effort or time and it is fun to spend time with Him.
God doesn’t get lonely, we are the ones who get lonely and we can’t figure
out why. Inside of us is that feeling that something is missing and we
just don’t know what it is and what we need to do about it. We will
search everywhere and try any
thing and for a time or a season the ache will dissipate and then it comes
back. Learning to visit with God on a daily basis is the only thing that
will truly take the ache away. We were created that way, the need to
spend time with God is a part of who God made us to be.
Make
time today, this week to set a time apart for God. Give Him five minutes
and see it will change you.
